We spoke with Nina Pierson about Amsterdam’s new all-day breakfast popup called Sunny’s Breakfast Bar.
Sunny’s is a new brand that you created in collaboration with Zonnatura. As the Creative Director, can you tell us about the idea behind Sunny’s?
I really believe in brands that focus on doing one thing extremely well; the so called ‘one trick pony’. For Sunny’s, I did not want to create an ordinary breakfast concept, but focus specifically on healthy smoothie bowls.
Did you know about 25% of the people skip breakfast in The Netherlands? We wanted to show that breakfast can be both nutritious and delicious.

Sunny’s seems to have a lot of character. Can you elaborate how this translates to the design of the brand?
We wanted to create a brand with a strong focus on consciousness and doing good. All the Zonnatura Muesli’s that we use in our smoothie bowls are whole grain, 100% organic and biological. The interior in the bar is made from sustainable materials, our staff wear shirts made from organic fabric and we have even painted our walls with paint that filters the air in the bar!
A personal goal was to give something back to our planet, therefore all Sunny’s Breakfast Bar revenue will be donated to plantation project ‘Partners Pays-Dogon’. After 3 weeks, we can plant 30.000 trees in Mali!
Sunny’s has its own music playlists. Why did you decide to use music to build the brand?
For me, creating brands is about creating personalities. A certain music style helps refine that personality. Some people might not even consciously notice it, but the right sound is very important for the overall vibe you create.
